ZINC Movement Co. is a new, project-based modern dance ensemble based in New Hampshire. ZMC’s director, Ava Girard, began the company as a platform for creating and showing her work and collaborating with others. ZMC’s mission is to pursue the power of dance to affirm human being. To that end, we work to create dances that honor existence by enacting it honestly in performance. We hold all audience members in highest regard and aim to give them a beautiful and fulfilling experience. “The one in darkness,” which we will bring to SoloDuo Dance Festival 2022, is a two-person staging of a single human being beginning to integrate several aspects of herself. We consider the wary, tense, and gentle reunion between this young woman’s praised, accepted self and another small, neglected self, distorted in darkness. This duet is a collaboration between Ava and co-performer, London Mills.

Quianna Simpson is a Columbus, Ohio native who began training at the early age. Her wide swathes of experience in a myriad of dance forms have informed her choreographing and teaching skills, and her technique is firmly rooted in west African dance. Currently matriculating through the MFA program at OSU she continues to refine her choreographic voice through exploration of traditional west African and Africanist movement. Her area of research is rooted in defining the transformative power in African Dance for African Americans in routine practice. Thus leaning into cultural pride, ancestral mining and redefining of what social justice and wellness means for African Americans. She Stands is an exploration of emotions, thoughts and feelings as a Black mother of Black children. Searching for the right words explaining the experience of a protest, asking for rights that my ancestors, myself and my children are promised but still have not received has failed…only movement remained.

Smutek Dance is a freelance dance company based in Detroit, MI and directed by Christa Smutek. Smutek Dance has performed at Detroit Dance City Festival, White Wave SoloDuo Festival, CDCFest in Orlando, FL, Eisenhower Dance Ensemble New DanceFest, World of Dance Chicago and The Gallery Choreographers Showcase. Smutek Dance was the DDCF Detroit Exchange Program Winner 2021. Her film, Unchained was awarded Festival Favorite, Newbie Filmmaker, in Opine Dance Film Festival 2020. Her films have been selected and finalists in Screendance International 2021, Dancentric Film Festival 2021, and Cinedanza 2021. Smutek’s piece, Dissonance, began as a piece set on 10 women before the pandemic and was then reworked into a duet. It premiered at Detroit Dance City Festival 2020 and was also showcased at CDCFest 2021. Dissonance displays two lonely women in disharmonious relationships that find comfort knowing they are able to relate to one another. It portrays moments of boredom, indifference, sarcasm, and defeat.

DiMauro Dance is a collective of artists deeply invested in the artistic exploration of the human experience. Choreographer Jessica DiMauro Marks meets the challenge of developing literal gesture into abstract movement through robust physicality, while keeping the emotional integrity. She composes movement that is structurally athletic and emotionally driven, honoring the individual experience of each performing artist. In the company's work, the body is used as a vessel to express the rich layers of human emotion. Through a diverse collection of dance works, the Company reveals the body’s ability to express subtlety and grace, and conversely show aggression and struggle. “Love, Kisses and Such…” was created 20 years ago to reveal the physical experience of emotional neglect. The Company reinvigorates this solo through the lens of this unique time in human history. dimaurodance.org

HR Dance is a collective of artists, directed by Heather Roffe. Roffe is a choreographer and scholar in the field of dance. She has performed/toured with the Garth Fagan Dance Company, Bill Evans Dance Company, FuturPointe Dance (as performer, choreographer, co-director), and Assemblage Dance, as well as with her own company. Her choreography has been recently presented in the International DUMBO Dance Festival, the Rochester Fringe Festival and MAD Festival, and in 2018 she was awarded the New York State Dance Association’s “Outstanding Educator in a Post-Secondary School” for her work as Associate Professor and Director of the Dance Program at Nazareth College. In her choreography, Roffe probes the human experience, (relationships – to each other, our world, technology, and divisive memes – like classism, racism, gender, etc.). This dance, You Are Not Like Me, but, I Am Like You, explores the bizarre ways in which we “measure and compare” ourselves to others (particularly across race/ethnicity), and focus on the differences, rather than the similarities.

Alison Cook Beatty Dance (ACBD) is a classically-based modern dance company exploring the universal human condition through expansive and emotionally-driven movement. While grounded in American modern dance, ACBD constantly strives for new approaches to unique creative expression. This emphasis on innovation is evidenced by our commitment to diversity and inclusion in programming. ACBD is dedicated to community-centered, accessible programs, welcoming all generations, cultures, identities, and bodies. Executive/Artistic Director Alison Cook-Beatty, a former Paul Taylor dancer and Doug Varone- mentored choreographer, founded the Company in New York City in 2012. In 2020 the Company was awarded grants from Dance NYC and the New York Cultural Development Fund.
"Hope Ashore" was choreographed by Alison Cook-Beatty and rehearsed with dancers Sasha Rydlizky and Nika Antuanette over Zoom who were on separate coastlines; Alison needed a way to connect them. With the New Year approaching, Alison wanted to send a message of hope to all and thought a Message In A Bottle would work with the coastline environments.

Lindsey Braham Howie © Brian Mullins
Lindsey Bramham Howie is Assistant Professor of Dance and Head of Dance at High Point University. She holds an MFA in Choreography from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a BFA in Dance Performance with a concentration in Jazz Dance from East Carolina University. Lindsey currently resides in Rural Hall, NC with her husband and three beautiful children. Déferlante was originally inspired by the thought of the world opening back up and life re-emerging. I kept coming back to the idea and motif of breath and new life; a flower emerging from the soil. This was the first piece I was able to choreograph after being isolated for so long. I felt inspired and anxious by the excitement of being in the studio, with the dancer, and then on stage. My body felt a surge of energy knowing that dance and movement could be alive and celebrated once again.
